But of course, there’s the old saying that starts out, if it’s too good to be true…It turns out the Harvard School of Public Health decided to do a study on E-cigarettes and the results are startling.

It looks as if they may not pose the traditional cigarette threat, but they pose a different one altogether.

Diacetyl is a flavoring chemical used in E-cigs which are linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, most notably the incurable condition called “Popcorn Lung.”

This condition was first noticed in workers in microwave popcorn processing facilities who inhaled the artificial butter flavoring. The disease is totally debilitating and irreversible.

It’s a respiratory disease which causes scarring in tiny air sacs in the lungs. This leads to shortness of breath and excessive coughing.

“The amount of diacetyl in 39 of the e-cigs exceeded the amount that was able to be detected by the laboratory.

Diacetyl and other related flavoring chemicals are used in many other flavors beyond butter-flavored popcorn, including fruit flavors, alcohol flavors, and candy flavored e-cigarettes.”

Allan also noted how scary these findings are as the flavor names of these e-cigs include cotton candy, cupcake, and other flavors which would clearly be attractive to young people.

But that’s not all. Due to the fact that e-cigs are so new, it wouldn’t be a stretch to figure that even more risks will pop up in the near future. David Christiani, Elkan Blout Professor of Environmental Genetics, was the co-author of the study and said the following:

“Since most of the health concerns about e-cigarettes have focused on nicotine, there is still much we do not know about e-cigarettes. In addition to containing varying levels of the addictive substance nicotine, they also contain other cancer-causing chemicals, such as formaldehyde, and as our study shows, flavoring chemicals that can cause lung damage.”

It looks like the fruity-flavored “safe” alternative to traditional smoking, may not be all that after all, and it probably is best to cease any e-cig habits until further research is done on this emerging smoking trend.

This Plant Kills Lyme Disease Better Than Antibiotics, According To Research

The CDC reported that about 300,000 people are affected by Lyme disease annually. This bacterial infection affects people of all ages and is transmitted by deer ticks and black-legged ticks across the United States, and other 60 countries more.

The symptoms of Lyme disease are similar to many other diseases, so diagnosing it is not easy.

This disease can affect all body organs, including the heart, brain and nervous system, the muscles and joints.

These are the most common symptoms:

– Joint pain

– Fever

– Nausea

– Muscle pain

– Chills

– Sweats

– A rash in the shape of a bull’s eye

It is conventionally treated with antibiotics, but they treat the symptoms only, and the disease remains in the body, and might even worsen the condition.

However, a recent preclinical study showed that the whole stevia leaf extract is a powerful antibiotic in the fight against a pathogen known as Borrelia Burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Biology and Environmental Science, University of New Haven, West Haven, CT, and the findings were published in the European Journal of Microbiology & Immunology.

Researchers directly compared the effects of an alcohol extract of a whole stevia leaf product and conventional antibiotics, in terms of their ability to destroy various forms of Borrelia burgdorferi.

This pathogen is highly resistant to antibiotics and it can exist in various forms.

Therefore, it formed a barrier against conventional antibiotics, and they were unable to fight it.

On the other hand, researchers reported that “Stevia whole leaf extract, as an individual agent, was effective against all known morphological forms of B. burgdorferi.”

They found that 10-20% of Lyme disease patients treated with antibiotics for 2-4 weeks, experienced side-effects such as muscle pain, joint pain, and fatigue, and sometimes, these symptoms lasted for over 6 months.

They then explained:  “The leaf extract of stevia possesses many phytochemicals… with known antimicrobial properties against many pathogens.

Results from this study suggest that a natural product such as Stevia leaf extract could be an effective agent against B. burgdorferi.”

Even though this was a preliminary study, its findings are promising, so it can serve as a basis for further research on the effects of the whole Stevia leaf extract, as it is a potentially powerful natural treatment of Lyme disease.

Sugar Industry Hid Evidence of Links to Cancer and Heart Disease For Half a Century

New information has now surfaced which reveals that the sugar industry knew exactly how dangerous their products were in tests found back in 1967, but they buried the facts in order to keep their sugar train going for as long as possible.

Sugar has been found to be physically addictive and people have real and severe withdrawal symptoms when cutting it out of their diet.

Sugar has also been linked to cancer, tests have shown that cancer cells ‘feed’ off sugar and they thrive when in a body which has been fed with a high sugar diet.

The JAMA Internal Medicine have reported how the Sugar Research Foundation was set up in 1967 to test the effects of this new wonder-food.

In the post-war world, high sugar and high calories diets were a novelty, and were encouraged to give people as much energy as possible, something that had not been available to much of the world during the war years.

But the results of the studies conducted were not what the sugar industry wanted to hear.

As PLoS Biology have reported, The Sugar Research Foundation linked sugar to bladder cancerwhen tested on mice and suggested a link between sugar and coronary heart disease. The study was promptly stopped and the results were never published.

Dollar Stores Under Investigation: Products Contain Chemicals Linked To Serious Illness, Disability and Cancer

Recent reports are coming out suggesting that copious amounts of toxic chemicals are frequently found in Dollar Store products.

HealthyStuff, in collaboration with the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, showed that in fact, more than 81% of the products tested returned positive results for toxic and hazardous chemicals!

The campaign tested 164 Dollar Store products, and 133 of those products returned a reading for at least one hazardous chemical (and in some cases, several hazardous chemicals were present).

The four largest Dollar Store chains – Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and 99 Cents Only – total sales of greater than $36 billion, operating more stores nationwide than Wal-Mart.

As they largely serve impoverished areas already at a disadvantage, these chemicals are being forced upon the shoppers least able to avoid them.

Jose T. Bravo, National Coordinator for the Campaign for Healthier Solutions said:

“People struggling to make ends meet are confined to shopping at the Dollar stores. We are already disproportionately affected by pollution and lack of adequate medical care, and now we know we’re filling our homes and our bodies with chemicals released from Dollar store products. This needs to stop.”

Jeff Gearhart, HealthyStuff Research Director said:

“We’ve tested 1,000’s of products from dozens of retailers over the last ten years. And on average the dollar store products are some of the poorest peforming from a chemical hazard perspective. I am particularly concerned about the comparatively high percentage of products containing hazardous plasticizers. ”

Many of the chemicals found have been linked to cancer and other long-term health consequences, and while many companies (including such major brands as Target and Wal-Mart) have made changes to protect their consumers, dollar chains need to make the same reforms.

Toward that end, families and communities with dollar chains can let those companies know they want safer products, and join local and national efforts advocating for nontoxic products.
