Drink Coffee to Save the Liver from Alcohol Damage

According to studies, coffee can help reduce the liver damage caused by consuming too much alcohol or food. To confirm these claims, researchers analyzed data from 9 studies published in the past.

In fact, they reviewed more than 430,000 participants. The participants drank 2 cups of coffee every day. As a result, they managed to decrease the possibility of developing liver cirrhosis by a staggering 44%.

What’s shocking is that coffee managed to prevent a potentially fatal disease, said the lead author of the study, Dr. Oliver Kennedy. Therefore, consuming coffee may significantly reduce the risk of developing cirrhosis.

Why Coffee?

Coffee is a cheap, tasty, and well-tolerated beverage. It is a popular drink for both young and old. As studies claim, adding additional cups of coffee each day may greatly reduce the chance of developing liver disease.

More precisely, Dr. Kennedy suggests adding two additional cups of coffee. As the research claims, in 8 of the 9 studies, drinking 2 more cups of coffee proved effective for reducing the risk of developing cirrhosis.

However, in 1 study, the risk of developing cirrhosis decreased as the daily consumption of coffee increased. By comparing the results to zero coffee consumption, researchers decided that 1 cup of coffee can reduce the risk of developing cirrhosis by 22%.

While 2 cups of coffee could drop it by 43%. The more coffee the participants drank, the better the results. With a shocking 57% decrease in developing cirrhosis from drinking 3 cups and 65% from drinking 4 cups.

What Is Cirrhosis?

In response to damage to the liver, cirrhosis occurs. Every time the liver is damaged, it tries to repair itself. As a result, scar tissue begins to form. The more cirrhosis progresses, the more scar tissue begins to form.

In the end, it makes it difficult for the liver to function properly.

The Link Between Coffee and Cirrhosis

According to the study, there is a link between coffee consumption and the decreased chance of developing cirrhosis. However, the results proved more effective only for filtered coffee rather than with boiled coffee.

Even though the studies show that coffee could be useful for preventing cirrhosis, it cannot help prevent the risks of diabetes and obesity – the authors of the study specified in the Journal of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

What the authors wanted to note was the fact that consuming whipped cream and sugar toppings can’t help prevent liver disease. Furthermore, scientists are still not sure how exactly can coffee prevent liver diseases and whether the brewing method matters.

Special Compounds in Coffee

Coffee is a very complex mixture. It contains many chemical compounds that can help protect the liver, says Dr. Kennedy.

However, the coffee can’t help if you are leading an unhealthy lifestyle. In fact, your lifestyle choices can have a heavy impact on your liver.

Utilizing the information from these participants, the team of researchers working on the 90+ Study were able to ask, ‘What allows people to live to age 90 and beyond?’

The goals of the study were to:

– Determine factors associated with longevity

– Determining modifiable risk factors for mortality and dementia

– Examine rates of cognitive and functional decline in the oldest-old

– Examine the epidemiology of dementia in the oldest-old

– Examine clinical pathological correlations in the oldest-old

The participants in the study are visited two times annually for neurophysiological and neurological tests.

By The Glass Or By The Bottle?

Drinking wine can help, but this doesn’t mean that you should drink a whole bottle with dinner.  Moderation is the key! According to Mayo Clinic, for healthy adults older than 65, moderation is one drink.  For those under 65, it is two drinks. A standard drink is 12 fluid ounces of beer, 5 fluid ounces of wine, or 1.5 fluid ounces of distilled spirits.

It was shown that moderate alcohol consumption provides the following benefits:

– Lower chances of ischemic stroke

– Possible reduction of your risk of diabetes

– Reduced risk of developing or dying from heart disease

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine looked at how physical activity can counteract the negative effects of drinking. Senior author of the study, Dr. Emmanuel Stamatakis studied data gathered from heath surveys from England and Scotland and then divided their 36, 370 participants in three groups.

The groups were divided into those weren’t very active, those with moderate amount of exercise, and those who exercised on a regular basis. Then, the team of researchers looked at how much alcohol the people in each group consumed, respectively.

Calculating 5,735 total deaths over a follow-up period of 10 years per person, the researchers found that compared with lifelong abstinence from alcohol, hazardous drinking was associated with an increased risk of death from all causes. They also noted that the more drinks had weekly, the greater the risk of death from cancer.

When they compared the weekly recommended amount of exercise for adults, they discovered that it “appeared to wipe off completely” the risk of cancer deaths due to alcohol.

An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched on their window.

The Father asked his Son, “What is this?” The Son replied “It is a crow”. After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, “What is this?” The Son said “Father, I have just now told you “It’s a crow”. After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?”

At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the Son’s tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. “It’s a crow, a crow”.A little after, the Father again asked his Son the 4th time, “What is this?”

This time the Son shouted at his Father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :-

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child”.

While the little child asked him 23 times “What is this”, the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed.
