“It’s a brave step into an unknown world.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are unlikely to return to royal life, and questions remain about what their future holds as they continue to establish themselves in the United States. A royal expert suggests that without their royal titles, the couple’s future may look “rather bleak.”
During an appearance on The Times’ “The Royals With Roya and Kate” podcast, royal historian Hugo Vickers discussed Harry and Meghan’s journey since stepping away from the royal family. He noted that the couple is still finding their footing in America, emphasizing the challenges they face without the structure and support of the monarchy. “It’s a brave step into an unknown world,” Vickers said, adding that he is concerned about the financial demands of their new lifestyle, which includes security costs and maintaining their luxurious Montecito home.
Vickers pointed out that much of the couple’s current success hinges on their connection to the royal family, referring to it as “Celebrity with a Royal connection.” He suggested that this reliance is why the couple is so focused on building and maintaining their brand.
Since leaving royal duties, Harry and Meghan have remained in the public eye through various interviews, documentaries, and media projects, including Harry’s memoir Spare and Meghan’s children’s book. They also have multiple projects in development with Netflix and have launched initiatives such as The Parents’ Network, which supports families affected by cyberbullying.
However, Vickers warned that unless Harry and Meghan continue to create new initiatives, they risk fading into obscurity, which could make their future look “rather bleak.”
Despite these concerns, podcast host and royal editor Roya Nikkhah noted that people close to Harry believe he is content with his new life. “He wanted a settled, calm family life,” she said, adding that he feels he has achieved this, something he felt was unattainable within the royal family due to the pressures he faced growing up.
